Last time I checked diaspora* was still not a real part of the Fediverse and maybe never will be.
Of course you can choose to join d* anyway, but if you want to connect with the Fediverse choosing for Friendica (Or Hubzilla, though I found it not easy to use, with many options) which is kind of similar to d*.
What I was trying to say is that, from what I have read, d* software since years makes no effort to connect to other Fediverse software. They are on their own island.

It’s still a part of the fediverse. Fediverse doesn’t have to be just activitypub.

Disroot uses Hubzilla and I did find it hard to use.
