What if I am British? Am I still an poseur? Which accent should I put on to avoid being a poseur?

I imagine you could be British and still have a fake British accent, right? Like if you adopted a “posh” accent or a working-class accent but that wasn’t really your background.

Nah, I’m Londoner to the core. I can talk posh when I need to, just got to be careful I don’t fucking swear.

oooh yeah… that’s like “code switching”, right? I didn’t think I did it, but then I went to the store with my young cousin, and afterwards they were like: “why were you talking like that?” and I had to explain that it was respectful to the cashier to talk to them more professionally.

But still, you’re from London, and I imagine you can tell the difference between the local accents and an accent from, say, Liverpool or Manchester or something? So, like, if you adopted an accent from one of those places, that would be weird, right?

Yeah, I can definitely recognise the regional accents. No way I’m going to put on Mancunian or Liverpudlian accent though!

Knew this guy “Wulf”, did a fake English accent, but not ALL the time. So he’d forget who he used the accent with, so one time I see him on the bus with some guys I’d never seen before and I say wassup to him. About 3 sentences in Im like “oh you lost your accent huh?” Fucking guy immediately switches it back on, and his buddy’s do it too .

Like, why man? You already had an out?!

That would make a great comic strip.

      • Panel 1: “Are you a gang?” “Yeah we’re a gang.”
      • Panel 2: “What do you do? Kill, deal, rob?” “We fake British accents.”
      • Panel 3: GAOL.

Awwww this hits hard. I did this for a week or two, around people that already knew me!

I read somewhere that “cringe” should be embraced because it is proof that you have grown.
