Like many others I am currently playing Starfield. It is a lot of fun, but it also has many flaws. My partner asked why I’m playing it so much if I have so many complaints and I explained that there really is no alternative for this sort of game. If you want a first person game with individual cities full of unique NPCs you can interact with your only options are Bethesda games or Outer Worlds. Skyrim came out over a decade ago, its still my favorite game of all time, and I still play it frequently, and I really hoped it would have more copycats.

I would compare it to being a fan of professional football, but not being a fan of the NFL. There really isn’t anywhere else to go. If you want to watch, they are the only game in town. I’m really hopeful with how long it has been since the last ESO that we might start to see some competitors in this space. There are a few that seem promising. Such as Avowed and The Bloodline, but until those drop I will be playing Starfield.

It’s true. If you want a well made game with every blemish buffed out, Starfield will be grating to play. But if you want a Bethesda game, Bethesda is the only studio that scratches the itch.

Same goes with Cities Skylines. It may be unplayable without mods because of the incompetent emergency services and cars insisting on using only one lane out of 6, but at least they have a community on Steam that has carried it and other Paradox titles for years by solving these problems using mods, which are impossible on the Xbox and Switch ports. Hence why those two versions of Cities Skylines have such negative reviews in comparison. And that the Steam workshop page takes such good care of the game makes it so much better than its only real competitor SimCity, which is now a mere shell of what it was in its glory days.

And speaking of CS, another favorite obsession of c/games that I don’t get is how they needlessly politicize discussion of a literal video game they already knew they weren’t gonna like because it has cars in it OH NOES!!! (Not to mention frequently demanding the immediate abolition of the economic system they owe the existence of all their devices and favorite games to with no further elaboration because they think it only refers to big corporations- this is why people are scared to try lemmy)
