Premier Doug Ford is first Ontario party leader since 1959 to win 3 majorities
Barely an increase over the last election, roughly 1.9%. This makes it the 2nd lowest voter turnout in recent history.
Because the problem in ontario is our ridings. My riding is fully ndp and has been for as long as i can remember. More people voting would have changed nothing. First past the post has ruined democracy.
More people voting could have actually changed everything. I clicked through probably 2 dozen ridings on elections.on.ca > unofficial results and only 2 had a margin greater than ~7k and some were under 1k.
Mushkegowuk—James Bay has a margin of 4.
My own riding saw the NDP incumbent also win, but only by a margin of ~1600 while being one of the higher voter turnout outs of ~51%.
So just so we’re clear: Ford called a snap election that cost taxpayers $189 million that won him an almost identical majority government, in order to create a “mandate to go toe to toe against Trump”.
Just want to be sure. Because he could have done just that exact same thing without costing us $189 million dollars since he already had the same government.
That fat dumb corrupt fuck is a fiscally irresponsible conservative cunt.
Shake my damned head. Shame on Ontario.
How many millions has he wasted with cancelled contracts and irresponsible decision making?
How many
millionsbillions has he wasted with cancelled contracts and irresponsible decision making?Billions. He has wasted billions, a magnitude larger. Just look that beer store fiasco and what its cost. Worst decision ever. Now just wait until he spends way more to buy back a conservative highway that was sold off for so much more than originally sold for.
Anyone that things a conservative has fiscal responsibility is delusional.>>>
I honestly think its a cheat in this election. He called an election to happen literally a few weeks after sending everyone $200 of tax payer money. Money that could have been used to support criminally underfunded institutions like Heath care (which people blame the feds for despite being fully within the provincial mandate)
Everyone is so concerned about healthcare and housing costs then they go and elect the guy that wants to privatize healthcare and demolish rent control and renters rights
On top of that I never received my cheque.
This sort of result makes me feel like I live in a different reality than apparently a lot of people.
Everything bad he does is Trudeau’s fault
I would say it’s sarcasm but people actually think that
Fuck
I offer a virtual hug to you my friend. Not the result I wanted either.
The same people who complain about their quality of life being terrible, vote for the same people who keep lowering their quality of life.
Hey guys, your vote hurts everyone, not just you and your family. 🤦♂️
The problem is people don’t actually realize the harm. They hear carbon tax on the radio and assume it hurts them finnancially without considering the rebate. They own a home so they don’t care about rent control, until in 2 years they can’t afford a college apartment for their kid. They hear some fat oaf tell them a 60 billion dollar tunnel will fix traffic with more lanes bro and they believe it.
This is upsetting, yet unsurprising. Just another 4 years of wasteful spending, public service budget cuts and maybe we’ll get another bribe just before the 2029 election.
It feels like the future is pretty bleak with yet another majority government….
Wild that the LPC have 60% more votes than the NDP and 52% of the seats.
NDP really punching an outsized impact relative to the vote distribution. I wonder if that was strategized or just a coincidence. The LPC got massively slammed by close races,
Glad the LPC got their status back. They really really pulled in votes, to see them still fail to get party status would be so frustrating. That’s not to say I’m happy with their leadership, they can do better.
I’m not upset seeing Bonnie Cromblie losing her riding (race is not closed yet, won’t be closed for another hour from now), I did not like how she ran her campaign at all.
Also glad to see Catherine Mckenny won! I love them, they’re awesome for the community, it was frustrating they didn’t become mayor of Ottawa, but maybe as an MP they have a new chance to do good.
I really wish the people of Ontario had punished the conservatives more. They failed to run a campaign – I don’t get it. Nobody showed up to my door. They didn’t drop off any flyers. The entire party didn’t show up to a single local debate or make a single news appearance or take a single interview.
If we’d had proportional representation this is what the numbers would be:
53 pc 37 lib 22 ndp 6 gr 2 new blue 1 ind
In the long run, the only viable solution is proportional representation: !fairvote@lemmy.ca
But would they? I’d have voted differently if we had PR.
I mean, yeah, if the percentages were different there would be a different outcome.
As long as your vote wasn’t going to the conservatives, it mostly doesn’t matter what those numbers look like as long as OPC is less than 50%.
Upsetting, but not surprising.
Oh God Ford just said he thanks us for supporting tunneling under the 401…
If you’re going to just increase capacity, you’ll just end up with more congested lanes. You need better infrastructure when you get off the highway if you want higher throughput. You need fewer lane changes that induce breaking. Adding more capacity without fixing the rest just creates more opportunities for randomized slowdowns that reduce the overall speed.
With Crombie saying she’s not going to step down as LPC leader I’m disappointed.
If you can’t win your riding, I don’t think you should lead the party. I’m glad the LPC has rebuilt a bit, but they need to transition to a new leader now that they’re getting attention again.
