Meta is one of the highest performing American stocks and 98% of their revenue is advertising. Make it harder and strike a blow for Canada!

The guide is easy enough that parents, grandparents and other non tech types should be fine with it.

fun fact: you can delete your facebook account. you can delete your instagram account. there are other ways to “keep in contact” with randos you have in your orbit, such as the “contacts” app built into your phone.

Wow, really???!!!??? Gee willickers, I bet no one thought of that!

This post was directed at those who have chosen not to for whatever reason.

Like many, I have a few hundred loose ties on there. A couple months ago, one I hadn’t spoken to in more than a decade messages me because we are now in the same city, so we caught up and now see each other etc. Is your suggestion that everyone should spend however many hours messaging those loose ties just in case things change down the road? How many hours would you allocate to that?

I left a few months ago. I don’t miss the updates from people I drifted away from. I do enjoy the conversations I must now initiate to maintain worthwhile relationships. Hearing about somebody’s week face to face is worth a lot more than a few dozen “happy birthday hope it was a good one” replies once a year.

Select “No, don’t make my ads more relevant by using this information.”

I tried this with my wife once… She cracked and voluntarily turned that setting back on after she started getting a ton of alt-right advertisements. :(

Yeah, and that works on her laptop’s browser, but her primary computing device is her mobile phone. So ads on YouTube app, ads on Facebook app, ads on Instagram app, also ads on TV YouTube app.

Firefox + uBlock works for YouTube on mobile (Android, anyway). It will even allow videos to keep running in the background.

I can’t speak to if it works for FB and IG but it’s worth a shot.

      …why not?

Anecdotally, some orgs refuse to use other platforms and gate their content behind a facebook group. It’s maddening to say the least, but a fake account can come in handy sometimes (behind an iron shield of ad and tracker blockers!).

No, because i’m not going to share names of orgs that collectively could dox me.

But we’re talking about a huge range of small businesses, municipalities, local groups (i.e. bike clubs), and advocacy events.

My regional police department issues important information about road closures, missing persons, etc. through twitter, as an example.

Another example of one that I’ve seen happening too often are health-related support groups are very often in “private” facebook groups, which are often joined by people who use their real name/real accounts. This opens them up to family members or employers finding out about health-related issues they did not want to disclose, or worse, insurance companies who purchase the data from these data scraping websites.

Even local businesses will post discount codes and coupons on these platforms, rather than through their website or newsletter.

There are hundreds of examples of people being “locked out” of information unless they join these horrible platforms, and that’s not cool.

You should really talk to them about moving away from the book of faces, tell them all they do is sell your data without getting any of the benefits. The book of Faces and the Zak used that data to pay for Trumps election.

Marketplace, occasional info behind the pay wall. Unfortunately can’t just leave Facebook, but I try to not make myself a profitable target by aggressively limiting my data.

That is one thing I have not found a replacement for but is it worth having a Facebook account you continue to use just for that? Maybe you keep your facebook account but stop using it for anything but market place.

That’s pretty much what I have done. I genuinely don’t use it really for anything other than marketplace and occasional search for some pay walled info (I don’t add to it, just search), and I don’t buy stuff that isn’t local.

Personally, I’ve got good friends from decades ago there, so I will on occasion use it to message folks.

Other groups: charities run a lot of stuff through there.

I know my mom’s church organizes through their facebook after requests from parishioners.

But more importantly, the key to winning this and most mass efforts is meeting people where they are instead of demanding they be 100% pure in all their choices.

I have friends from decades ago, some of which I would message and months or in some cases years later I would get a message saying I do not really use Facebook anymore so we chat and I get new contact info.

Talk to the charities inform them that they are giving money away to the book of faces, and that money was used to elect Trump. Encourage them to move to something like mastodon. This goes for your mommy’s church as well, if they want to pay the Zak to get trump into office then they should continue to use the book of faces, if they do not want to support a guy who could not even put his hand on the bible when being sworn in to office.

I understand the meeting people where they are but remember your mental health is more important than other peoples, if that means stay on facebook so be it but just remember facebooks goal is to make you depressed so that they can give you the occasional dopamine hit so that you come back.

“Excuse me, I know you’re trying to raise money for a children’s hospital and yes, facebook ads hit a substantially larger market than would be possible on an alternative service but have you considered, who cares about those kids when you can stick it to Zuckerberg?”

And yeah, a church of predominantly old people is just going to switch communication methods… Have you met old people?

Maybe, just think about the world from the perspective of those who don’t share your exact priorities or views?

I personally still have an account, I read somewhere when I was thinking of deleting my current account that keeping your account active cost the Zak and Meta money via ad stuff rather than closing it completely. No idea if that is true or if it is anything noticeable but I have all Meta things; ad trackers, ads, and the book of faces proper blocked via my pihole setup.
