Does the Player Core book replace the Core Rulebook? Or are they both need?

    Welcome aboard! We’re a small community here, but active. Please feel free to pepper us with questions.

    It, uh, helps with community visibility.

    The green-trimmed ‘x Core’ books are replacements for the red/tan-trimmed books. They’re fundamentally the same, with some language changes, class touch-ups, and minor rule updates. The mapping from old books to replacement books is:

    • Core Rulebook -> Player Core
    • Advanced Players Guide -> Player Core 2
    • Gamemastry Guide -> GM Core
    • Monster Core -> Bestiary

    It’s worth keeping in mind that the contents of all of the rule books is available for free in multiple places online, most famously on the Archives of Nethys website, but also piecewise on pf2easy.com.

      I was looking at the Archives last night. I also got pdf copies of both the Player Core and the Core Rulebook. I thought the Player Core was the newer version, but the Core Rulebook kept popping up in my searches.

      Are there any good apps (iOS preferably) for character building and saving? I love building characters to get a feel for a system, and they come in handy as NPCs while GM’ing.

        Path builder is the gold standard for PF2E character creation. It’s currently available as a website for larger devices and an android app. The iOS version is coming soon, probably in a month or two.

        I only know about the website and android app called Pathbuilder: https://pathbuilder2e.com/

    The Player Core (1 and 2) are the remastered version while the Core Rulebook is the one before the OGL scandal happened.

    As a refresher WotC wanted to abolish the open game license which allowed third parties to write and publish DnD compatible stuff while using terms and languages coined in DnD. Paizo used those as well and had to rephrase everything that would infringe WotCs IP. They also optimised pf2e a bit here and there.

    So when you start new in pathfinder 2e, it would be best when you stick to the Core books (white spine): Player Core 1, Player Corel 2, GM Core, Monster Core.

      Thanks, I knew about the PF2E change after the OGL debacle, but I could not find if the Core Rulebook before or after that. White spines, that makes it easy for physical books.

        It’s also green accents, for PDFs. Particularly look to the “Second Edition” tag in tag in the upper right corner. Those are the ORC books.

    It’s a replacement book. It’s sort of Pathfinder 2.5 or maybe 2.1. The books with “core” in the name are the core books of the remastered PF2E rules. That’s Player Core, GM Core, Monster Core, and Player Core 2.
