We can’t do this outright and we can’t do it quickly. There are US troops stationed here (for the time being anyway, apparently the new admin is having thoughts about this), there are massive economic dependencies, etc.
There was plenty of time for preparations. The writing has been on the wall for more than 8 years. (when that orange Putin sockpuppet was elected US president for the first time)
