So I have not been following the fires too closely, but thinking about this post your example sounds like pessimism of the intellect (knowledge that some, perhaps a lot, of people are brainwashed and stupid, ignoring root causes and causing further social damage).

Examples of optimism of the will could be knowing there’s groups of people actively working to support people impacted by the fires - and indeed, there’s always organizations, big and small, and individual people who help others when disasters strike.
