The results of an ethics investigation into now-former congressman Matt Gaetz will be made public after a secret vote to share the report in the final days of 2024.
Members of the House Ethics Committee voted again earlier this month, reversing a decision to withhold the findings of a long-running probe into allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use.
The report is expected to be made public as lawmakers prepare to leave Washington for the holidays, CNN reported. Gaetz, 42, responded on X, arguing his actions in his thirties were “not criminal” and he now leads a different life.
I swear, these guys must go to some special school for downplaying. They’ll say, “Yeah, I’ll admit I used to party a little bit hard on the weekends” and then you find out they dismembered three women and buried them in the basement.
It’s not just downplaying. The claims are always very relatable, and (usually) released before the scandal. The average member of the public hears the claims, identifies with it, and perceives themselves in the role. That way the public will get upset about the “mistreatment” of someone that could have easily been them. After all, who didn’t party in their youth, and try to get laid at every opportunity? Why are they going after someone and trying to villainize them for sowing wild oats?
But that’s not what this is about. It’s about Matt Gaetz having sex with children, and he desperately needs to bury that lede.
That the report’s release timing is given out before the report certainly gives Gaetz plenty of time to get out in front of the reporting. Gotta manage that public response.
