Had Russia attacked Sweden or Finland in the past, the response from NATO would’ve been exactly the same as it would be had they been accepted.
I think that’s less than certain. Who’s to say that NATO’s response wouldn’t be closer to the Ukraine war, keeping a strong thumb on the scale while avoiding escalations that might lead to Russia launching nukes? I don’t think anything less than a treaty obligation would pull NATO in.
