hey, i set up an instance for a german speaking community.

(everybody else is welcome as well)

i’d like to support the whole project and idea of a federated network.

the instance is set up for federation with lemmy.ml, so feel free to add it if you like : )

Try to explain it like the new user is five years old?

    How federation works in Lemmy

    • federation means that if you write on one instance of lemmy, other instances can copy that content
    • you can subscribe to communities from other instances
    • before you subscribe, the content won’t be copied over
    • if you want to copy over old content, search for it in the universal search bar™
    • just copy the URL

This is way too complicated. As a new user, I’d expect that content of other instances would be available on mine, just like in Matrix.org, for example. Element.io and Mastodon explain federation well, maybe be inspired by their docs?
