      I touch on this in another comment. Soil subgroups have diagnostic features that group them together, just like animals prior to Linnaeus.

      For instance, clay translocation (lessivage) from the surface horizon to the immediately underlying horizon causes clay enrichment in the underlying horizon and that groups the soil as a luvisol.
