Btw, I finally decided to commit to learning Japenese since my friend wants to take N4 JLPT. I’m not sure whether I want to take the exam yet but I shouldn’t rot for too long so I decided to study together.

I stopped studying Japanese after I started working and thereafter I relied on informal learning but it wasn’t moving things fast enough.

Don’t worry the bot is still otw o7 i just have a fear of manually testing my own code

Learning N4 level Japanese in general haha. I can read and understand a lot because I know more kanji than N5 level and I’ve been listening to a lot of videos in Japanese and watching anime. But I’m certainly still at the beginner level.

I’m better at writing than speaking because it gives me time to think and look up words.

I’ve been learning for a long time too lol. I knew the very simple stuff since high school, but I never really learnt much until the past few years.

It’s actually pretty hard to learn without an accountability partner. Back when another friend of mine was studying for N4, I was studying too(N5), but I stopped halfway.

Informal learning is also a great way if you’re not preparing for JLPT. I can somewhat communicate if I’m not writing in formal Japanese, albeit with very limited prose.

I should revisit akiyama ryohei sensei’s videos on Japanese grammar.

It’s true, you definitely need some kind of partner, I’m mostly stuck at N4 level but it’s still annoying that spoken/vernacular Japanese is different enough that my comprehension is worse than French, and I only learned that much later, and written Japanese is generally a challenge because I didn’t grow up with Chinese literacy skills lololol. All these years and I still have the real world level of a toddler imo haih

Yeah, written and spoken Japanese are quite different especially if it’s among friends. XD I think I’m somewhere around the end of A2 in marugoto. I stopped at A2-4 which is actually halfway of N4, but I’ve forgotten lots of terms that I normally don’t use and informal language doesn’t help me with grammar exercises haha

How does one stay sane when things are just impossible to finish? I’m tired of getting gaslighted by management.

Going through my old stuff and found my ex’s break up letter to me. Legit couldn’t remember anything about it, I think I was too afraid to read it.

I hate how even in the break up letter she managed to gas light me after admitting that she had anger issues and that she hurt me and my family.

In some ways I have also achieved a bit of closure. I was under the impression she’s got zero remorse when she ghosted me 7 years ago. Younger me just didn’t know about my self-worth and didn’t know how to establish boundaries.

Also found some of the gifts that I gave her (she returned it during one of the “breakups”), including a Fujifilm Instax and some film. Wanted to chuck it but I think I could use some cold hard cash by selling it.

Woah, okay, so Mali gov is reclaiming the .ml domain which mean lemmy.ml will be gone as well. I wonder if they can just rehost whatever they have into a new domain

from what I heard, it won’t me easy, but it would be one real stress test for federation. hopefully, we don’t have to block them out while they’re migrating. I wonder if perhaps it would be better for them to just start over with a clean slate.

They shouldn’t have to. Their server is intact, only the server address is unreachable forever.

Like your house still stands, but your street name is suddenly gone from all street signs and maps.

The problem is for the entire ActivityPub fediverse that identifies instances by domain names. If a server moved their domain they had to have a way to broadcast the name change to all the other instances. Mastodon had a way to this; Lemmy has none.

It’s like you getting a new phone number and you have to ask everyone in your contacts to change your number in their address books.

            >If a server moved their domain they had to have a way to broadcast the name change to all the other instances.

even if lemmy had a way to do this, doing it for all the users at lemmy.ml would create a large load of federated network traffic between instances, and at the level of a single instance it would cause a lot of database changes (I’ve heard that the sql schema for lemmy isn’t very optimized).

also, as activitypub doesn’t prioritize synchronization (unlike git and matrix), there could be a lot of desynchronized state, with the name change of users reaching some instance but not others.

it would be interesting if lemmy.ml really went the clean slate way (and I think the original intention of the devs in running that instance was just to test their code, not to have it become a “flagship” instance), it would sure showcase a valuable lesson in the fediverse…that you shouldn’t rely too much on big instances (there is no huge facebook/twitter/reddit-like thing here).

but at the moment it’s generating a lot of server load as is, proportional to how many users on .ml instances are subscribed. every time a post is created or a comment added, the server software tries to post updates to the unreachable instances and fails, filling up the error logs.

if an instance migration tool is on the roadmap, now’s the best time and use case to re-prioritize and fast track it. any work the lemmy dev’s not taking on on this issue would be work for the admins of all the other instances.

Aiyo my mom made an Instagram account

    And she just followed me.

What do I do? I don’t want her to meddle in stuffs I’m doing. it’s young people stuff that doesn’t necessarily in line with what they’re hoping for in their child.

Time to make another one that’s private with less traceability. Even the email you use to make the new one should not be tied to any accounts. Don’t link phone number so IG won’t use contact list to add you.

After this, pay attention to when you or your friends talk about IG. You don’t want friends to mention “that funny story you put up last week” and have your mom hear it only to wonder why she didn’t see it.

If you’re going to do another alt insta, might as well try another fediverse analogue and get a Pixelfed. At least it’s not Facebook who’s going to add your new alt and its new alternate email to their profile of you, that will just kantoikan you eventually.

ETA: if you don’t want to move, stop posting on main and just use stories and only post to your close friends filter. Or soft block ur mum so she unfollows you

I would’ve recommended my instance which is metapixl.com but I’m also shopping around as I’m not sure if I want to stay there, but it’s decent enough (having issues with the alt-text character limit but otherwise it’s fine). The flagship is pixelfed.social which is huge now but they do get first round of stable releases, but regardless there’s a list here https://pixelfed.fediverse.observer/list - filter by signups to yes. Most of them are general instances so other than the non-english one I don’t think there’s a problem to pick. ETA: oh wait! Check their abouts, some of them allow nsfw content (which shouldn’t be a problem until u check local feed)

ETA: I would recommend metapixl.com regardless because they offer the cushiest amount (max 20 pix; caption length is max 2k characters; most others will put about 5 pix with max caption of 500 chars)

Additional info on Pixelfed - upcoming features is tiered access to your posts; so a bit like fb flist, so if she ever finds u again, you can have real public posts and posts she’ll never see

Aha! Lol i was reading up on it – there’s some legal leeway imo but otoh one of my fedi mutuals (a futual??) mmg long time low-key sideeye the whole rebranding for management history issues (and tbh they’re the only reason I even am this up to speed with the various interplays of the various players)!

It’ll be interesting to see what happens next. The biggest booster is a Canadian but he’s not actually a dev for this. The actual dev is barely 20 yo tak silap (si kainoa tu). Most of the crew aren’t corporate or corporate-trained, so lagilah kalau terkena anything I also dk (eta: like related to when FB approached some of them to berdiskusi pre-Threads launch; most of these guys… tak pernah kena tipu, is all I’ll say about it). Hopefully the power and privilege of being European is gonna help somehow.

We should totes recommend ikandipecat tho 😆
