There’s some discussion that the weird morphing of his style was caused by undiagnosed mental illness progressing to advanced stages when he got older.
Could have also been the lead and vermillion (mercury) in the paints.
When I look at this, all I can think about is that that guy went on an LSD binge in his early 20s.
