It was probably the nightmare manga chapter that solidified it for me. I already liked her the most because of her various facial expression in reaction to everything that happens, but that chapter made me appreciate how stoically she lives her life, despite the immense despair that her difference in life-span has looming over her.
She’ll outlive everyone she cares about, and she is deeply, deeply haunted by that fact. But unlike the typical long-lived characters in a lot of series, that avoid heartbreak by avoiding relationships, Marcy’s gone in the complete opposite direction. Forming close bonds with good people, being more open, caring and affectionate with those around her, rather than less.
Writing long-lived characters it’s always tempting to make them aloof, cool and distant, unfeeling, or unknowable. It’s great to see it portrayed in a more relatable way. Just because we humans can outlive several dogs in one lifetime, there is room in our hearts for all of them. Why would elves be any different?
