Hey guys, I’ve been making the discussion threads for Secret Invasion. I plan to do this for every series coming up as well as the movies as they premier. There was some discussion about spoilers in the most recent thread and I wanted to see what you guys think.

It seems on desktop spoiler tags work fine and hide the content but on Voyager/WefWef as well as many of the 3rd party apps they don’t work so I wanted to see what you guys think we should do. Currently I have just marked the whole thread as Spoilers since most everyone seems to be joining in after watching. But some have mentioned having it be spoiler free.

I have 3 options I’m thinking of.

  1. Mark the whole thread as spoilers
  2. Make the thread spoiler free but use tags for any spoilers
  3. Make 2 separate threads, one for spoilers (Post watch discussion) and one spoiler free (pre watch/speculation)

What do you guys think? And thanks so much for taking part in the discussion! It’s one of the main reasons I became a mod here because I love to read everyone’s impressions. I’m a couple episodes behind but I’ll join in more once I get caught up.

EDIT: Ok seems like most everyone feels like discussion threads are expected to have spoilers. But to appease those that disagree, I think starting next week I will start making two threads. Hopefully that will encourage more engagement as well. Thanks everyone!

Anyone walking into a discussion thread without first consuming the content deserves what they get.

No spoilers in the subject lines, obviously, thread should be fair game.

This is 100% where I’m at. I don’t understand the purpose of a discussion thread, if not to discuss the things that happened in the episode.

Maybe a pre-episode thread for speculation. But in any post-episode threads, spoilers should be expected.

I think spoilers in discussion threads kind of comes with the territory of entering a discussion thread, but all of the 3 options make sense. I’d probably lean towards 3.

I agree with this. If it’s a discussion thread for an episode, then we should expect spoilers for that episodes and the episodes leading up to it. I guess the grey area is spoilers for other series/movies that are not directly referenced by the current movie/series being discussed.

I guess this is more of a side question, for threads like this one https://lemmy.world/post/1305917 I was wondering if maybe we should mark it NSFW (since we don’t currently have a mark as spoiler checkbox) so that apps can blur it or hide it depending on user settings? I personally prefer avoiding any on-set pictures but the thumbnail of that post just showed the pic

I think this is a good idea and hopefully the Lemmy devs will add a mark as spoiler function soon. Unfortunately at this point it’s up to the OP to mark as NSFW. It doesn’t look like I have the ability to mark it after it’s posted so my only option is to remove the post. We could add it in the rules, but I feel like most of the time people will forget and it will just lead to a lot of removed posts and people being upset that their posts got removed. @Hurts@lemmy.world, @DoctorTYVM@lemmy.world, @thisisdee@lemmy.world, any thoughts?

Yeah, I agree, request OP mark it NSFW just to block the thumbnail and if they don’t comply within a reasonable time frame remove the post if it contains spoilers in the thumbnail image

I think rather than removing right away, we can ask OP to mark it NSFW, and if not updated within a certain amount of time we can consider removing the post
