You joke, but I’ve recently seen that exact sentiment on a (Facebook) post about “too many 2-storey houses together, where are their lawns!1!1” 🙄

Imagine the whiplash I got, when I went online and saw people hating on three storied building with their own gardens, and calling them commie blocks, acting like it was the greatest indignity to live in them. Yikes!

Not pictured: systemic and brutal oppression of any hint of even unorganised opposition.

You Americans really need to take a look at the socialist countries you’re extolling, life in them was genuinely terrifying. Keep your nose down, saying anything remotely critical in front of the wrong person could completely ruin your life, and the lives of your friends and family as well.

Norway is not and never was socialist.

Edit: on reflection we are squabbling over definitions here. Seems rather pointless, and I didn’t mean to be as … aggressive as I probably came across. I’ve just seen more than my share of people on Lemmy genuinely advocating for USSR style systems, so I probably overreacted a bit.

I get it. Generally people pushing for socialism aren’t pushing to be the USSR. Really what we mean is “Capitalism with really strong socialist safety nets”.

“Capitalism where you don’t die if you can’t produce” is the goal. “Capitalism where you’re still comfortable if you can’t produce” would be better, but I can’t imagine it happening in my lifetime.

There are a lot of tankies on here since Lemmy was created by self described tankies, so I get it. Most folks on Beehaw are much less aggressive and don’t believe that state sponsored violence is a good thing

Gee, let me see if I can form a mental picture - You mean the kind of systemic and brutal oppression that goes on today against anyone speaking poorly of the ongoing genocide fueled by the AMIC? Or anyone who’s too black for a cop’s liking? Or anyone violating the ‘anti-camping’ laws popping up in cities recently? That kind of systemic and brutal oppression?

I got news for you - Life in America is genuinely terrifying. I’m deep in debt and two paychecks away from getting evicted, most people don’t even have that much of a cushion. Eli Lilly sells the medicine I need in order to live for $350 a vial. If I don’t keep my nose down to the grindstone, it will, in fact, completely ruin what life I have left, and the same is also true of my friends and family. Don’t fucking lecture me on dystopia, I know exactly what it is.

So the protestors are tortured until they confess to bogus terrorism charges? Locked up under horrible conditions in labour camps in Alaska for years and decades? Do you risk imprisonment for merely saying to someone you thought you could trust (like, say, your children) that they should be allowed to protest? Because then, yeah, that kind of brutal oppression.

Of course there were some things generally done better in the USSR, thing is, you don’t need a fucking socialist dictatorship for universal healthcare, social security or public education. Many, many capitalist countries offer all of them.

I think you’re confused between which part of a socialist dictatorship is socialism and which part is dictatorship.

Most, if not all countries have a level of socialism, US has less than say France, who have less than Norway, etc.

Please do, because neither of those are exclusively socialist policies and both of them predate the labour movement by a very, very, very long time.

Not entirely socialist but effectively thus.

How about various forms of socialised medicine in the UK or Australia?

No one is getting casually put up against the wall there.
