Buddy I hate to break it to you but that’s not what desktops are for at all. Desktops are to make available to you any or all tools that you utilize regularly and to which you require easy access.
That being said, it’s your desktop and you are more than welcome to use it however you prefer.
Never use your desktop to store shortcuts, unless they are very temporary, and then clear up often.
You have a taskbar and start menu to organise and find everything you need, you can even do startup applications.
My dude what do you think a desktop is for?
Wallpapers, obviously. And cool widgets.
