Fallout 4 just got updated with a “next-gen” update that got the game Steam Deck verified, fixed bugs, and added some new content.

However one of the ways they got the game verified was by disabling the game’s launcher by default, the same launcher that is the only way to change graphical settings.

You can re-enable the launcher by changing your steam launch settings to SteamDeck=0 %command%

The core lesson should be “stop adding useless launchers” and even more so “stop making launchers the only way to change graphics settings”. I’m glad the steam deck has rules in place that prevent games with a forced launcher to receive a “verified”.

That’s what I’m taking away from this anyway.

Yeah, making them the only way is stupid. But it’s nice as a way out in case you configure yourself to an unrunnable state.

Totally not needed either. Just have an additional shortcut for “safe mode” and it’s fine. No need for a full launcher just for that…

Tbh, part of being steam verified requires booting directly into the game and not going to a launcher for the game. So this does get them over that hump.

I’m happy the options are still available at least, as somebody who’s currently using my steam deck to play Fallout 4 at 1080p on a TV, I need to be able to modify the settings when moving between playing on the device and on a TV.

I think launchers are allowed, they just have to be usable with controller input. Hitman 3 is verified, and still shows a launcher on Deck, but when launched on Deck the launcher shows and accepts gamepad navigation.
