There’s a reason judges are supposed to recuse for the appearance of conflict of interest, not whether they actually are biased. When government officials’ motivations are questionable, people lose faith in government, which in turn makes it easier for “outsiders” to come in and wreck it all. A strong democracy with broad faith in government doesn’t produce politicians like Trump. The malaise and distrust stemming from this form of politics feeds directly into the threat.
