It’s by design. Afaik they don’t volunteer that info to any branches of law enforcement. All they care about is making sure people pay their share (that is not going to be debated here). And afaik, the irs mostly takes your word for things especially when it’s 1099 income with no way to prove source.

Pretty sure they do and this is just a rumor designed to get people to incriminate themselves. The whole trope of criminals filing taxes on their crime income is from taxes filed after they got caught to avoid also being charged with tax evasion.
I’m pretty sure you are wrong. That would make it much less likely that people would file and pay taxes, not that most illicit income is reported to the irs anyhow.
I think you misunderstand volunteer versus share with appropriate subpoena, etc. Tax info is considered private without a good reason to be shared with law enforcement or other parties.
I suggest you look more into this and stop relying on your gut and whatever you have seen on truth social or similar.

Do you really think an IRS agent is going to get in trouble for tipping off someone in another agency that a criminal confession exists within a tax filing? Are you familiar with the very common practice of parallel construction? If criminals filing taxes honestly was actually a protected act there would be laws rendering those documents inadmissible in court, but there aren’t any such laws. “Please meticulously document your criminal finances and do our work for us, don’t worry, it won’t be used to start an investigation, only to finish one” - someone would have to be very gullible to find a statement like that persuasive.
truth social
Not sure what I’ve said that justifies lobbing insults like this
I’m now going to block you because you are clearly being obtuse and contrary on purpose.
Noone said anything about anyone getting in trouble. It’s just the way it is and the fact that you can’t grasp that says a ton about your knowledge and comprehension.
I’ll repeat. You need to do some more reading on this. This is something that some of us have known most of our lives and seen played out in real life with the likes of Trump and others. The irs flat out will not send any information on a taxpayer to any law enforcement agencies, period. Not only is it just not the way it’s done, they don’t have the time as they are constantly overworked and understaffed and most of it is based on ancient systems crunching data and looking for patterns that get flagged for a second look by a human. And as I said in another comment, the irs mostly takes your word for everything and they don’t care where the income comes from. Plus if you think that someone is smart enough to file taxes to only be committing one crime at a time but also stupid enough to tell the irs fuck knows who else where the money comes from, that says more about you than them.
What do you mean in this sense? The US government is the by definition a system of systems. Few organizations share information unless mandated by law.
Oh, I know. It’s not so much about the IRS caring as it is about the absurdity of paying taxes on something the government actively tries to prohibit on the federal level. But hopefully we won’t have to deal with that much longer.
Nope and nope. Not how that works or went down. The government wasn’t setup this way so that someone, somewhere, could maybe go after the people committing more than 1 crime at a time.
The irs literally takes your word for everything and on source of income, you don’t have to put exactly which laws you are breaking, you could use made up titles or euphemisms for job titles.
There are many cases of people reporting income to the IRS and effectively pleading the fifth when asked where it came from. There’s plenty of precedent for this.
The irs doesn’t care where you get your income, all they care about is getting their due.
It’s really funny how segmented the govt is in this sense. The IRS: did you steal something? Gimme some sales tax and we good.

More like they want something to go after you for if they can’t technically prove anything else woth enough evidence to put you away
Call it the Capone strat

Exactly. So much misinformation around this shit.
