His desire is not to say what he wants. His desire is for no one to be allowed to disagree with him when he does.

Just for him though. For others he loves consequences; exclude or browbeat them or or firebomb their office or slam them on the pavement and arrest them. Whatever.

Time for the Frank Wilhoit quote:

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition … There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

I was out with friends the other week and we went to the pub that we hang out in almost 20 years ago. Shockingly, some people were still there and never really left. We sat next to a table wth 3 dudes talking about how they just grew up different and they miss to be able to say what they want. They didn’t use the word cancelled, but that’s what they ment. At some point i turned around and asked them what they wanna say that they can’t anymore. I didn’t got a real answer because they were really drunk. I told them that i believe they just want to be openly racist, which they still can, they just don’t like the repercussions.
Lots of complaining, lots or arguing, but it always boils down to racism

“I just want to be able to shit all over people with certain racial or sexual characteristics without anyone pointing out my bigotry, telling me to ‘go fuck myself’, or punching me in my stupid face. You’re not allowed to say anything anymore!”

My mother said basically that the other day and I just yelled out the window that the current president sucks and said “now we wait for the police! Anytime now!” (I don’t live in the US BTW)

Which is also the point of the article. It’s only people who have nothing more serious to complain about, that complain about “political correctness”.

People in Thailand probably aren’t complaining about “not being able to say anything these days” because they can actually complain about something tangible- that is: you can’t speak freely about the monarchy.

Ah, I interpreted your statement in terms of “the current president sucks” rather than in terms of saying anything you like (e.g. about the monarchy).

Or, is this where I double down and start insulting you?

Fun to poke fun at the boomer stereotype, but is there really anyone here that doesn’t self censor due to the state of public discourse?

I filter myself based on the environment and people I’m around. This would always be the case. I don’t go on unhinged socialist rants to my boss in 2024, and I wouldn’t have done that in 1964 either. Hell, in 1964 I’d have an astronomically higher chance of being questioned and jailed for my “extreme” anticapitalist views in the U.S.

dude im as left as they come, when it comes to free speech, i believe that it should exist, and that i should also be free to beat the ever living shit out of someone if they have a bad opinion.

But that’s just me practicing free speech, who knows what my actual opinion on the topic is. Holding “extremist” views as a method of articulating my points is one of my favorites. You can literally just say shit, and nobody will care. It’s incredible how little other people care of your existence.
