Dungeon Meshi is a well liked manga, and an adaptation by Studio Trigger is now airing. If you haven’t picked this one up, consider joining us. Both for fun and as a way of contributing to activity on Lemmy.

Episodes are available to stream on Netflix.

Well, crud. That victory really didn’t last.

We finally have an appearance from a proper antagonist, the mad sorcerer. He is an ancient dark elf carrying a spell-book full of forbidden magic. And he’s really not very happy about his pet dragon getting offed.

He seems to think that Falin is the red dragon, now. Or is the red dragon Falin?

Either way, she’s taken away again, and the gang end up as a quartet, licking their wounds in the company of the orcs. As things look to be at their worst, Chilchuck has a crisis of conscience.

Remember not to spoil anything if you’re a manga reader, but feel free to elaborate on tidbits of lore that may not be coming through in the adaptation.

Back in the episode 11 thread, I talked a lot about the OST for the show. I wanted to highlight a part of the episode in which I thought the OST was excellent this time as well: when Falin wakes up and walks to the dragon corpse. The music set the creepy mood perfectly. Also, as an added bonus, I loved that the music didn’t kick in until a couple seconds after she opens her eyes. She springs awake in complete silence, something that we aren’t used to as media viewers. This type of scene has been done so many times before and the music always kicks in right when the eyes open. So, it was extra creepy to subvert that expectation.

There was also a great piece of animation that I wanted to highlight from this episode. When Marcy is going on her cancel-spree, there are some great sequences in there filled with impact frames that really add to the frenetic nature of it. The animation really adds to the sense that Marcille is on the verge of losing herself, just like the animation is losing its form as a reflection of that. This one is probably my favorite of the impact frames, you can still kind of make out the little dragon she is cancelling:

After we joined up with the orcs, the episode calmed down a lot (though, did Marcy just lose her staff for good? we kind of glided past that quickly). I am excited to see where things go from here. Falin may be lost for now, but we know that she is in there somewhere. Also, the ghosts seem to be helping us out as we go about our way now. So, I take that as a good sign since Falin has always had a bit of a connection to the ghosts.

Surprised at no new OP/ED like others mentioned. Though, I do love this ED, it has really grown on me this season.

I really like both the ED and OP, but I was also very much looking forward to something new to match the shift in tone and growing stakes.

Didn’t notice those frames on my first viewing, they’re cool af.

That sequence is so much more impactful when animated. Her deranged cackle especially really delivers the point that forbidden magic takes something more from the user than mere mana.
