Is it a ‘thank you for prepping my room’ or ‘please clean my room today’? If you tip post cleaning, it’s likely going to someone else the next day. Many hotels now only do housekeeping on demand. How do employees feel about this - do they miss the tips or are they happy for a less stressful workday?
ETA- I’m in the US. Does the rest of the world tip housekeeping? I always have when traveling because I do at home, but I don’t know what the norm is.

Now I feel embarrassed. I don’t tip elsewhere because it’s not expected, but I try to fit into the local culture when I travel.
If i have cash with me, I usually leave 2-5 bucks per day if I’m staying more than one night because i know it goes to the person who’s actually doing the work. I usually don’t tip on one night stays. $2-3 if they’re just swapping towels and replacing supplies. $4-5 if I’ve ordered food or have a lot of trash/mess. I don’t know if it’s expected as much as just a ‘thank you’.
