After Ukraine said they were withdrawing from Avdiivka.

There’s been a bit of mixed information around the net, but Ukraine officials say that they retreated according to their plan, and I’m pretty sure that plan doesn’t include running away from the front lines with their back turned to the enemy. So, at least based on how I would retreat, is that parts of the troops move back while others provide cover and once they get some distance they set up to provide cover for the remaining parts.

If in that scenario the enemy decides to pretty much just run forward, as they’re claiming land and “winning”, it’s pretty obvious how casualties can stack up pretty fast. But this is of course just a speculation, I don’t have even the slightest idea on how Ukrainians actually operate in theory nor in practise.

That sounds plausible. I just don’t get why the Russians don’t take it slow, and at least try to not get all their men killed.

and at least try to not get all their men killed.

Not in their doctrine. Hasn’t ever been. Cannon fodder is cheap and the ones who get left behind don’t complain. All that matters is results and if a graveyard or two worth of people happen to die they’re just good propaganda and while their bodies are fertilizing sunflowers they’re praised on speeches back home for their sacrifice for the good old Mother Russia.

Western way of thinking is vastly different from their point of view and the latter has been fed to the people for centuries.
