Thousands of Military Families Now Face Loss of Medically Necessary Care for Their Children

WASHINGTON — Last night, President Biden signed the FY25 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into law, which includes a provision inserted by Speaker Mike Johnson blocking healthcare for the transgender children of military servicemembers. This provision, the first anti-LGBTQ+ federal law enacted since the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, will rip medically necessary care from the transgender children of thousands of military families – families who make incredible sacrifices in defense of the country each and every day. The last anti-LGBTQ+ federal law that explicitly targeted military servicemembers was Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, which went into effect in 1994.

    The NDAA contains a provision banning any medical treatment for “gender dysphoria that could result in sterilization” for those under 18. It’s unclear if the current legislation would ban puberty blockers (which don’t affect fertility), hormone replacement therapies (which can), or mastectomies (which are rarely ever performed on minors).

    I’m sure the Trump administration will take a limited and conservative approach to deciding what “could result in sterilization”. Ever read the list of possible side effects on medication? There’s a lot of things various common treatments could possibly do.

    Here’s a university trans health center saying HRT can cause sterilization. And the UK banned new application of puberty blockers because “the science wasn’t clear that they were safe”. Slipping in language like “could” is just open season to declare anything to be disallowed. It’s questionable whether a Democratic administration would be responsible with that wording, it’s certain a Republican one will not.
