  • Netguard with HOSTS

I was under the impression you cannot edit the hosts file without root? How do you do this?

    Debloat Script

Also obviously a backup is recommended, but didn’t really want to fresh install, I should be fine to run the debloat script without fresh installing correct? Also will this break apps like Signal that check for Google Services and if it doesn’t find it doesn’t rely on them? I had an issue with Signal not sending notifications because of this (Blocking off Google Services with Netguard). I know on systems where Google Services are removed it works fine because it doesn’t detect them, but the debloat script looks like it just disables them correct? So I assume I may run into issues with Signal notifications? I don’t know why Signal can’t just allow us to choose.

  • I heard of Minetest a while back, it looked pretty alpha. Looking at it now it looks really good, I’ll have to try it. I’d love a game that can recreate the Minecraft experience but be FOSS. If it’s a pretty similar clone of Minecraft, I’d be happy.

Edit: Hmm, it is definitely missing a lot compared to Minecraft, as a game on it’s own it seems like it’d be great. But I cannot help but compare it to Minecraft and unfortunately it just does not seem to be there yet. Animations are not similar, it’s missing a ton of the content Minecraft currently has. It feels like an early version of Minecraft, which is understandable but I don’t know if I can ever say I’d play this when Minecraft exists. Which is a shame because I want to like it, but eh. It needs work.

  • Unfortunately this only applies to people under GDPR. Currently we (non GDPR) can pay an extra dollar to hide WHOIS information, or maybe some registrars have it built into their price. Not sure if the WHOIS censorship was a result of the GDPR, or they improved upon other stuff too that us who don’t fall under GDPR miss out on. You do still need to put in a fair bit of information to the registrar most of the time though unfortunately.

I know Njalla exists, but they’re not a registrar, they’re a middleman between you and the registrar. Although it is far more expensive than most registrars, I believe they buy the domain outright. They accept a wide variety of payment options including various cryptocurrencies. But yeah, I don’t know of anything else, they are only registrars but I would take a libre registrar in a heartbeat if it was priced similar and was solid.

  • I was considering self-hosting my own SearX instance for personal use. Not going to lie though, I really do enjoy the aesthetic customization of the JS ver of DDG, which SearX seems to lack. But I could be wrong and just haven’t toyed enough with it? As far as results, I can’t say how different they are to DDG. I probably will switch to SearX for a little and see how I like. Can anyone comment on the aesthetic customization part though?
