  • In my family, over my lifetime, more people started working more hours outside the home. So choices were made when buying clothes to get items that required less work. Less hand washing. Less dry clean only. Less wash separately. But the clothes still had to look professional. I still have a “permanent press” cycle on my washing machine. I think it’s a relic from that transitional era.

I have seen the shift to more casual work clothes over my lifetime. I remember some places had a day or two of “casual” days. Sometimes employees would have to pay a few dollars to wear casual items. I really don’t remember when places transitioned to such casual clothing. I think I worked a lot for a couple of years, blinked my eyes. And everyone was wearing sweat pants. Is there anyone who was paying attention who can fill me in? What happened?

  • I have a vintage stationary bike that I got for free a few years ago. It’s really handy. But it started squealing LOUDLY whenever used. I thought maybe this was it, and it’s going to be heading to the dump. But I wanted to at least try to figure out what was going on. I figured the sound had to be something rubbing against the wheel so I got close, cranked the pedals, and looked around. I didn’t see any parts touching the wheel.

I cranked the pedals some more. I listened. It didn’t seem like the sound was coming from the wheel. It was higher up. It was the rpm gauge! It’s an analog gauge with a needle. The faster the peddling, the more the needle moves. The needle was getting stuck! The tiny needle was making a huge sound. It had all the force from the pedals. But it was just bouncing around at the zero end of the dial, vibrating and creating an animal like screech.

I thought maybe there’s a loose cable. So I tightened both ends of the cable. Both sides were loose and I was sure that would fix it. But it didn’t. I thought about disconnecting the cable. I thought a little more and thought maybe a little oil would work. I rooted around all the bottles of mechanical stuff and I found a suitable looking oil. I applied a little to each end. And it works! It was a really simple repair.
