People responding to me often write “those laws are to protect young people…” as if a law made with good intentions must have positive consequences. It is not true. There are lots of very bad laws that have terrible consequences.

Americans don’t realize how incredibly fucked up their age of consent laws are. In Illinois a 16-year-old can get a prison sentence and LIFE on the sex offender registry for making love with his or her 16-year-old boyfriend or girlfriend. Same in New York. In California literally all sex everyone under 18 has, is illegal. These laws do far more harm than good.

over 400 million people live in the EU. ages of consent in those countries range from 14 to 16. they have no epidemic of sexual abuse. they’re doing just fine. in fact, their rates of teen pregnancy and STIs among teens are far lower than those in the USA. it’s clear to me that sex-phobic neo-Puritan hysteria about power-imbalances does far more harm than good. teens are capable of choosing their own partners. we desperately need to stop infantilizing them and telling them they’re idiots. it very often becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
