Rapists and criminals amirite?
agreeing to a litany of demands that include banning masks at protests and refusing to meet or negotiate with a coalition of pro-Palestinian student groups, according to a statement released Monday.
Zionism furthering authoritarianism, how fucking surprising.
“It’s literally a virtue to lie if it advances his Islamist agenda. The West will learn this lesson the hard way.”
Muslim here (I know, imagine religion on Lemmy) and setting aside the rabid Islamophobia, can I just comment on how fucking weird this particular stereotype is? Like, most prejudiced stereotypes trace their origins to reality at some point, even if they’re later twisted into misleading half-truths or complete fiction, but Western Islamophobes just made up this supposed mainstream Islamic belief out of whole cloth and bring it up as a gotcha. It’d be like if I said Jews are promiscuous and like to seduce married non-Jewish women (please tell me this isn’t already a thing). It’s just… bro what the fuck are you talking about?
(“Want to hang out tonight after school?” - 授業後今晩遊ぼう?
Minor nitpick: 今晩 is a pretty formal term; 今夜 is used instead in everyday conversation. Also in Japanese you’d only specify the moreimportant of the two timeframes, either “tonight” (今夜/夕方) or “after school” (授業終(が)終わったら), not both
Uh… the French Revolution had a lot of guns. Like seriously, look up the women’s march on Versailles l, the fall of the Bastille, or all the insurrections.
Man, Westerners who have never lived understand a dictatorship saying stupid shit like this really grinds my gears. Like, don’t make these sorts of statements until you’ve had to make sure you don’t complain about prices too much with friends in case one of them is an informant for the secret police.
There’s no simple, easy, or quick solution to this, and since the election, things have gotten considerably worse on the ‘possible solutions’ front.
Yeah of course, which is why someone needs to be out there convincing people to do the things that aren’t simple, easy or quick.
Calls to organize and seek alternatives to oligarch-controlled resources are the groundwork which orgs constantly call for but no one fucking heeds.
That’s why I qualified my remark with “mainstream”. I’m talking Bernie-like figures who are widely known and respected by liberals. Unless I’m mistaken that segment of the population still thinks elections and phone calls to Congressmen are going to fix this.
So what’re the instructions that will provide the solution that those calls haven’t?
As I said above the problem is that the right people aren’t providing those instructions, but also: strike, strike, strike. I’m getting past the point where I can make authoritative-sounding statements, but I find it really weird that what is arguably the strongest weapon in the working class’s arsenal is barely being talked about. Yes I know groundwork is necessary for that (though I’d argue it’s not nearly as much as commonly thought), but still someone needs to get the conversation from “strike? But my job/insurance/whatever!” to “how do we make it possible,” and at least from my position outside America I haven’t heard of anything on this front.
Hear hear. When I look at the state of American democracy from outside, what I find really distressing is that it’s not just Bernie; no mainstream person or organization with national reach is giving concrete advice and/or instructions on how to depose the oligarchy, so you have people’s energy going to angry tweets and meaningless parades.
Uh… they are, pretty much by definition.
I mean something tells me that’s one topic that wouldn’t be appropriately covered in schools, but that’s just my guess.
I mean that’s hopeful, but remember that the New Deal also came against the backdrop of the height of socialism in the West and the labor rights movement. Modern Americans don’t have the organizational strength to make such a compromise attractive in the eye of the ruling class, and they don’t seem intent on ever having it.
They’re not talking about a new deal as in a new status quo after this whole mess; they’re talking about the New Deal and are hoping for more of that.
TL;DR for the article: Pretty much all federal social welfare programs and worker rights in America were established as part of the New Deal. Think if Bernie became president with a cooperative Congress.
On one hand we have people chilling with espresso and the other is exploding.
As Israel has clearly demonstrated, chilling with espresso is not mutually exclusive with exploding. Also you’re a sick fuck.
I was going to say “Israel for the great good?” but then realized that yes they do in fact believe that. Got me.
Good thing you had that alt text; I thought it was 609 and was like what?
Literal parallel reality material. Arabs overwhelmingly support Iran’s antagonization of Israel and wish their own governments would do the same. Source: am Arab.
Because America successfully turned most of the Middle East into US puppet states. There’s a reason most of the region is ruled by autocratic regimes. The only Arabic-speaking country whose government is materially opposed to Israel now is Yemen.
That would be a pretty messed up way to tax people. Like, a place becomes more desirable and suddenly all original inhabitants have to leave because they can’t afford to pay their “income” taxes? What?
Oh. Goddannit Germany.
