To answer your question about system updates, it’s almost always safe to update and there’s no reason not to update as long as your CFW (Luma) is fully updated. System updates are only an issue on OFW, since the updates are basically just for patching the exploits used to get CFW in the first place.

The first game I can remember playing was Desert Demolition: Starring Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote on Sega Genesis. I don’t really remember the gameplay well. I still have the game (with the box and manual), but it’s stored away somewhere (probably a bin in my closet).

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
It’s so easy to setup and you get so much out of it. I personally recommend Project+. It adds new characters, costumes, stages, music, Melee-like gameplay and more.

If you’re willing to check out non-RPGs, then I highly recommend Star Tropics (which is on the flowchart). The best way to describe it as a cross between MOTHER (setting) and The Legend of Zelda (gameplay). An interesting thing to note is that Star Tropics is a first-party Nintendo game that’s never been released in Japan despite being developed there.
Another thing is that there’s a point where you’ll need to get a password off of the Internet. The game originally came with a letter from the protagonist’s uncle that contained the password, which would only be revealed by dipping the letter in water.
