  • Of course people should be able do whatever they want. I am simply trying to rationalise why OP would have mixed emotions about his dad having a new child at 66. This is simply my POV as to my own feelings if I were in a similar situation. I’d be happy for my dad and his gf, but concerned that their situation might become extremely complicated because of dad’s age. Like I said, I’m speculating, there could be other issues at play which OP has not mentioned.

  • Well, my instant reaction is that 66 is pretty old to be having kids. 66 doesn’t sound that old but from my experience things start to go downhill pretty quick if you’re lucky enough to hit 70.

The chances that the dad will pass before the kid is 18 are pretty high, so that will leave the GF to be a single mother. There’s also a risk that the dad could suffer from some sort of age related illness which would mean the gf would have to look after both an infirm older person and a kid.

Of course, I’m just speculating. Dad could be fit as a fiddle and still able to run around and play with junior until his 90s but my folks are both in the mid-70s and would really struggle to look after a toddler full time.
