We’ve been investigating some recurring issues with the user experience on the instance, and have traced it back to the way Lemmy handles language settings.
Here’s the TL;DR on how to ensure you see all of the content on this instance:
In your user settings, make sure “Language” is set to both “English” and “Undetermined”. You can select additional languages as well, but they aren’t currently allowed on this server.
On desktop, you can use CTRL+click to select both options.
This will allow you to see content for which the author has not set a language, and content which has been set to “English”.
Lemmy really needs to make that selection more obviously allow multiple languages, or have an “all” setting at the very least
They seem to take “none” as all, so if you don’t choose any, that will also work.
Interestingly, I have two Lemmy accounts and hadn’t set any languages in either at first. Until I noticed one of my accounts couldn’t see certain posts, and was advised to do the multiple language thing. Why it only affected the one account I have no idea, but it’s definitely worth explicitly setting this just in case.
Just don’t select anything. You can control click on your selected item to unselect the last one.
Congrats Trekkie lemmings, welcome to all the content you’ve been missing out on 🥳
Thank you very much!
I selected multiple languages and am sometimes having trouble posting comments from apps (Liftoff and Wefwef) as they don’t give the option to select a language… When I submit the comment I get an error message telling me to select a language. It doesn’t happen all the time though. For instance this comment was written on Liftoff.
That’s interesting…from what I understand, Lemmy tries to detect and assign a language automatically, but I have no insight into the apps.
