After many days i finally received my GDPR data request, which i supplemented further with reddit-user-to-sqlite, so i have a nice full local copy of my account. Now I’m torn on whether to fully shred the data of the account or just delete it:

  • On one side, i highly dislike the idea of willingly contributing to a Wisdom of the Ancients scenario, although it might be a moot point anyway since it looks like Spez wants to wall off Reddit after all
  • On the other, fuck Spez and i don’t wanna contribute a single cent to their profits
  • And as an additional point, it’s rather unsettling the amount of info you can gather of somebody from their Reddit posts, just from a privacy point of view

What are your opinions on this?

Edit: Just deleted my RemindMeBot reminders, somehow that felt like it had almost the same finality as deleting my account somehow…

Edit…

    Personal opinion: shred it.

Your main argument for not shredding it is because it’ll cause loss of information for the people looking for help and stuff like this, right? But Reddit will end [as you said] walled in or destroyed or become such a hellscape of noise that it won’t matter anyway.

And the more content that you keep there, the more you’re encouraging other people to contribute with that shithole. Their content will get lost too, for the same reason as yours; so by removing it now you’re preventing the loss of future ancient wisdom.

Also, if shredding it, edit the comments beforehand. Otherwise they’ll be reinstated by Pigboy and his Trotters. I personally simply replaced them all with garbage and left the garbage there, but it’s up to you.

I’m hoping my data request comes in soon!

I’m torn on deleting my account. I have some nice helpful (long) posts on there and would rather someone find them useful some day than just burn it all down.

What irks me about all the protest coverage is the focus on just the API cost, when to menthe crux is the complete ignorance of the admins that the communities themselves were the value of Reddit. We were the ones that put in content that made Reddit be what it is over 15 years.

I’m leaning to just changing my password to gibberish and logging out one last time once I get my GPDR request finished.

I just deleted my account I found that many of the tools to shred my data just didn’t work or maybe they do work and I just did it wrong? But in any case for me I just wanted out so I deleted my account.

Deleting comments on your own won’t do shit, King Steven the Turd will just reinstate them. Since you are an EU resident, though, you have a High Council of Bueraucrats you can appeal to. Do whatever you need to to formally invoke your Right To Be Forgotten. That gives King Steven actual consequences when his Royal Court doesn’t comply.

There is a need for some kind of reddit archive type of site with nice search, where we can just plug our data requests with options to filter out cats, memes etc.

Download data request file, upload file there, uncheck any sub content you want to not add and done.

I don’t know how much space you need to store this stuff though or who would pay for it and keep it running

IMO shred. We have archives of reddit, we’re not losing data forever. Reddit is losing the data.
