There are games with resal time and tile-based movement (Age of Empires 1, Warcraft 1), but all those I remember are not single character (à la roguelike).

Do you know any game in which you control a single character that has real-time and tile-based movement?

EDIT: I found one example: Real Time Chess https://www.kfchess.com/

Thanks!

They mentioned real-time movement. Disgaea is turn based last I checked. Though I can’t imagine a game that uses real-time movement and that is also gird based as they kinda go against each other design wise.

I haven’t played it. It intrigues me, but it hasn’t been enough to pull the trigger yet.

There’s also stuff like crypt of the necrodancer which is tries to combine turn based mechanics with rhythm based input I couldn’t get into, and crown trick where it’s turn based but everything moves when you do so you can play it like real time. I could see those being what he was thinking of.

That sounds like the game that made me ask this question. I saw it in a talk from the developer (GDC or something like that)… I don’t remember the name :/.

            Thanks for the suggestions.

Oh, didn’t realize you were OP. It doesn’t indicate it, at least on kbin.

I’m not sure if necrodancer meets your criteria because I just couldn’t get past the start. Crown trick is rogue lite though, so doesn’t fit. There are other dungeon crawlers like vaporum out there, though I haven’t ever taken the step to playing any of them to remember what they are.

      Maybe they mean ‘isometric’?

OP, maybe check the Shadow Tactics games? They might be what you’re looking for. You control up to 3 characters on a mission but you can only ever control one of them at a time, technically.

I did a quick search and found this video, it may be tile based, but in that case it tries to disguish itself as a more granular-movement system. The tiles are not visible.

For an example of the mechanic, see the EDIT on the post: Real Time Chess https://www.kfchess.com/

        Thanks

I agree that they seem contradictory, but they are not technically exclusive. See Real Time Chess: https://www.kfchess.com/

Wait, I might just be thinking of the Ultimate Unlosing Ranger. Tho I suppose it’s turn-based in the sense that your actions all come from a pool, but iirc it’s more similar to Crypt of the Necrodancer or the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games.
