“People on TikTok to lifestyle-sharing app Xiaohongshu have been sharing their latest fascination, admiration and even disgust at what they are calling “báirén fàn” or White People Food.” 😂
“The point of the white people’s meal is to learn what it feels like to be dead, but I’ve taken two bites and it was so bad it made me realize how alive I am."
These are hilarious. But there’s a tidbit in there about the “996” work thing in China. 9am-9pm 6 days a week. That’s terrible. How do you do literally anything else?
This funny as hell. i am a white person who grew up in a household where the only flavour enhancing items we used were salt, ketchup and packet gravy.
“what it feels like to be dead” I feel this in my malnourished bones haha
Feels like yet another article that just makes you want to get upset with another group of people.
I don’t take that so serious, for me it’s hilarious :-)
yeah in general of all the international banter, food banter seems like the most harmless, most funny, and generally least mean-spirited of the lot
I’d say that that applies to regional foods as well with barbecue being the notable exception. The BBQ wars are still being fought to this day. Everyone knows eastern North Carolina vinegar based pulled pork is the best. Don’t @ me, the state of Texas. Lol
“the BBQ wars” oh my god 😂
This is must be an argument conducted while talking with your mouth full. “Mwafmuh…Ours is better. Pass the slaw.”
Carolina vinegar based pulled pork
Is that related to mustard based bbq? Mustard based is my favorite ♥
As far as I know, mustard based is more or a south carolina thing. The eastern NC bbq sauce is highly controversial from what I’ve seen online and pretty different to other bbq sauces. Some times it’s just apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, red pepper flakes, and salt/pepper/garlic that’s doused on the pulled pork.
Though I won’t turn down any BBQ that tastes good, I am definitely team vinegar base.
“Lunch of suffering”. I’ve definitely had a few of those desperation meals at my desk.
The article is hilarious, I had a great laugh!
Let them have their fun. We make enough jokes about their food already.
Remeber the “Are you going to eat that?” Meme…
The Guardian also has an article about it: https://www.theguardian.com/food/2023/jun/15/lunch-of-suffering-plain-white-people-food-goes-viral-in-china
They would be far from the first. There is a long tradition in the US of making fun of white people food, whether it is the entire cuisine native to the island of Britain or the more contemporary food blogger who for some reason is compelled to put raisins and walnuts in raw collard greens and eat it. I won’t deny that I’ve had ranch dressing on pizza in my life and I’m not going to pretend that isn’t nuts.
White people have a rich history of pairing things that don’t belong to be eaten together. (see: ham banana hollandaise)
