So who’s your favourite pop star?
Now there’s a shiny new Lemmy group up and running at @popheads (Mastodon users: follow it if you want more discussion of pop music in your Mastodon feed), it’s time to ask who’s your favourite pop star? Do you have a favourite song or album?
My current faves are:
Alessia Cara: Perhaps the most talented and certainly the most underrated of the current crop of pop stars. She’s fallen out of the limelight the past couple of years, which is a pity, because there’s some excellent songs on her recent albums:
Willow Smith: Done some really great songs recently:
And some all-time favourites:
Prince
John Farnham (but only his Whispering Jack/Age of Reason/Chain Reaction '80s to early '90s run)
Janet Jackson, and most of the broader Jackson family. (Jermaine, Rebbie, and TJ in particular have some hidden gems in their discography.)
Thanks for the share! I’m an obvious Swiftie here, very excited to be heading to Eras soon!
Second is probably Lana Del Rey for me (although there is quite the heated debate on if she’s alt or pop, I say both)
Third for me is Carly Rae Jepsen, her new album is fantastic, and a must listen! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLvVbazi0B4
Why must you ask such hard questions! I would say the two i like most would be Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande. After that i really like the somg “Mateo” by Tove Lo. I also really like Camilla Cabello, Nelly Furtado, older JoJo stuff (Too Little Too Late) comes to mind and “Let It Rain”
I always forget about Camilla! I need to make sure I put her on a more regular rotation in my queues!
I think Should’ve Said It is my favorite by her.
Easy for me, esp the live one :)
That is a really good one too
im not huge on pop music but i really like Aurora - The Gods We Can Touch and Imogen Heap - Speak for Yourself, some Taylor Swift - Red too
If you like Red we’re friends. I’ll have to check out the others!
I like Aurora. I have a few of her songs on my playlist.
@ajsadauskas @popheads i’m not a big fan of modern pop but if kah lo is pop then i am a pop head
@ajsadauskas @popheads i unironically love this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPwtJ89jes4@crumbleneedy @ajsadauskas @popheads yeah, I still don’t hate it.
@ajsadauskas @popheads if prince is pop then i love this pop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=oOJOVyKjWAIIt still bangs!
@Theroddd it really does
CRJ mostly, so definitely nice to see one of her songs as the first things posted here lol, and Charli XCX too I’d say
I’ll be honest I forget about CRJ too often, but then I slip into a funk and listen to her non-stop. I’m really digging her latest album right now! (As the post kinda showed…)
Post some XCX stuff for us when you can, I’d be interested!
Alessia Cara is great, I agree!
@Theroddd She’s incredibly talented, yet (aside from Here/Scars to your beautiful/Stay) completely underrated.
Which is a huge shame, because IMHO her best work is what she’s released after the Know-it-all album.
There’s also some real hidden gems in her discography, including tracks like Seven Days.
Hopefully, her next era (which is hopefully on the way) performs better.
I admit I haven’t listened to too much of her less popular stuff. I will check it out when I have time. Thank you.
In no particular order here are a few I’m loving right now:
Favorite liar - The Wrecks https://youtu.be/_kHjDNHEU5o
I dare you - The Regrettes https://youtu.be/WOgQpjARYyc
Hot mess-Zoe Clark https://youtu.be/ZLH4s-15wd4
Sorry to your next ex- Haiden https://youtu.be/h4iGcN01Bu8
IDGAF - Boywithuke https://youtu.be/Q1QcLbkYFaM
Also love Bruno Mars, Pink, Selena Gomez and many others (some I left out because they may be too far out side of pop, though I’m not what exactly they would be)
Some of these may push “pop” since it’s such a big, vague category. If you want please let me know and I’ll remove!
kylie. when the trap door opened dropping me into the shiny world of pop music, kylie was pulling the lever. to this day i call my preferred artists ‘showgirls’. they have been, historically: kylie, girls aloud and/or chezza, katy, britney. crj and selena gomez are semi-permanent showgirls-in-waiting. i’ve seen every one of them live, kylie six times, crj three.
i just saw a concert by the belgian singer angèle, who abruptly and unexpectedly became an instant showgirl. somewhere out there carly rae is pouting, sorry.
