Howdy yall. I’m looking to upgrade my current setup. I had SLI 1080s back when the 1080s came out but now no games support SLI, so I’m essentially down to a single 1080 and I’m struggling to play some new games.

Anyway, looking for a suggestion for a new “future proof” card that is compatible with my setup and if there are significant bottlenecks elsewhere. Im also not too keen on all of the different versions of each card. I assume my i7 needs to be updated as well but I’m not that bright. Willing to spend the $ but don’t want something that’s unnecessary.

Here’s my current setup (I have 32gb memory instead of 16gb) https://pcpartpicker.com/b/3h4CmG

Yes I picked it because of the name Yes I understand I made poor financial decisions in 2016, but hey, it’s gotten me this far. Just lookin for help

3080 is pretty safe if you can find it at a good price. 4070 is good too.

Last gen AMD 6900xtx is also very strong if u find a good price

At original pricing I’d guess no, but you might find good Ti deals these days.

I wouldn’t pay more than maybe 15% extra

Yeah I am rocking a 4070 and it’s amazing in Alan Wake 2. The only 4000 series card to consider, if you don’t want to spend fuck you money.

But if you want “future proof” you’ll need to go higher. And obviously no current or last gen AMD card is future proof at all. Ray tracing is the future. There, I said it.

Nobody else has said anything yet so just wanted to say that your i7 is probably still fine. CPUs tend to stay relevant in gaming for longer than the GPUs do. I only replaced my i5 4690k like a year and a half ago (bought in 2015).

Man, that’s how I was with my R9 290s. Things kicked absolute ass in games that supported Crossfire. Games that didn’t ran like absolute ass unless they were older.

I was looking for a GPU. Maybe a 5600 XT. My wife surprised me with an RTX 4070 for my birthday, which was a whole hell of a lot more than I was ever considering. Other specs include a 4790K and 24 GB of RAM, and all of my games run so much better. My CPU is a definite bottleneck here, but I don’t feel inclined to replace it soon. I’m playing at 1080p60. I don’t think I need to do anything crazy soon. I’ll do the PSU soon since I built this rig around 2014. Just to be safe that it doesn’t pop anything if it goes out lol

Anyway, I like the performance I’m getting with the 4070 on my rig. And your CPU will be less of a bottleneck than mine. I still don’t know if it’s worth the price…but what tf even is anymore?

I mostly play sims. I’ve got 400+ hours each in Cities 1 and BeamNG. It handles Cities 2 just fine. I’m running that at a pretty solid 30-45 FPS. Cities 1 also runs around the same framerate. BeamNG holds 60 FPS full-time now. Haven’t played much else recently so idk how good my experience is going to be as a general statement.

It depends on the game, but upgrading the 6th gen CPU to a 12th gen CPU allowed me to continue playing with the GTX1080.

Out of curiosity, what are you planning to do with the old cards? When I upgraded back in 2016 I had a roommate who wanted my card, but now I’m starting to look at my old fella and don’t want to just toss it in the trash to end up in a landfill.

Gonna look to sell them or make a tower for a family member who does nothing but stream and shop.
