I’ve heard about this too. AA is basically a cult in America, which was super weird when I heard about it for the first time, because that is not what AA is in my country either. It’s more like group therapy. I went to one meeting one time with a friend who was an alcoholic, just to see what it was like and there was no talk of God, just a lot of talk about how everyone’s addictions had impacted them and people were allowed to speak if they felt like it. Sometimes we just sat in silence while people mustered up the courage to talk about their deepest, most vulnerable secrets. It’s was kinda touching in that way.
They were all super nice to me as well because I just came in there from out of nowhere and I wasn’t an alcoholic, so in theory, it could have been super uncomfortable to them to sit with a stranger who didn’t have the same issue they did, you know? Like maybe they could have feared judgement from me or something. But they were so nice and I just thought they were all so strong for going through this shit. Most of them were all alone as well. Isolated from friends and family.
