    now used colloquially to denote a social attitude of disapproval towards expressions of individuality and personal success.

    That sounds horrible, expressions of individuality should be celebrated and promoted.

    In Australia we have ‘tall poppy syndrome’, where those who ‘succeed’ too much are bought back down. You can be your beautiful lovely weirdo self, just don’t try to be above everyone else.

      Success can be celebrated and promoted but the main point with the law of Jante is that everyone is equal. You are not a better person than anyone else just because you had success. We are all equals and should treat each other with respect.

      In the UK, that too often gets perverted back to social conformity, any difference seen as a tall poppy.
