Post world war two, imperialism was looking weak. Both France and the UK were declining powers.
Fascism had been defeated (in Germany and Italy) and Communism and Liberalism was on the rise. People thought a Union between France and Britain would bolster both countries and their colonies. Stopping the decline of their empires. Whilst also acting as a third pillar of Imperialism against Communism and Liberalism.
This idea didn’t get very far. The seuz crisis was the nail in the coffin for imperialism. This caused Britain and France to fall in behind the US. Setting the west as firmly liberal.
This is an old idea being rehashed.
