Being a Star Wars fan is easy. You just have to hate Star Wars.
As someone who likes all trilogys I never feel like a star wars fan
As both a Star Trek and Star Wars fan, I’m confused.

I just like space shit
Same. I love Red Dwarf and Babylon 5 too.
Hell yeah brother! Space, the outside place!
Er, the final frontier!

As a ST+SW fan, half of me likes myself, but the other half doesn’t like the first half.
I don’t think I have the necessary qualifications to assist you.
As a ST&SW fan, I hate SW so it’s all good I think.
I prefer star trek because I feel like I can connect with it and enjoy it
Star wars just feels like something I can use to switch my mind off and pass the time
Harrison Ford as Number One? That’s nightmare fuel.
I like both because I like sci-fi and fantasy, and Star Wars is space fantasy.
We just had a Star Wars crossover post on c!risa@startrek.website! You are all welcome!
I love your energy.

Do you mean this post by Stamets?
I’m dumb you mean the one about Vader lol
Still from Stamets though!
I don’t think Star Wars fans think about Star Trek all that much or necessarily even know about it. It hasn’t been a big deal in such a long time.
We CAN be friends!
you just need to agree with our opinion on Tuvixjust do something like what T’Lyn did and masterfully avoid the dilemma
Both universes have torpedos right
Of course!
Straight out the torpedo hole with Tuvix then
RIP Tuvix, Neelix, and Tuvok
I don’t like star wars that much, because it’s more acion than scifi
Star Wars is Fantasy to Star Trek’s SciFi, IMO. These genres get lumped together in libraries and publishing, and there is significant crossover between them, but they are still distinct.
George Lucas always said he hates it when people call Star Wars SciFi as he always considered it to be a space opera with very little Sci and heavy on the Fi.
Likewise, doctor who is pure fantasy as well, and it grinds my gears when people call it sci-fi.
The technology is “wibbly wobbly timey-wimey stuff”, and just pulled out of someone’s ass (sonic screwdriver, immortality chip, phone that works across time, etc etc) there’s nothing science about it at all.
Right, and even when sci-fi hand hand waves its technology it’s about its impact on society.
For example, Star Wars never directly addressed that droids are a slave race, in a society with apparently unlimited energy, and yet poverty is just absolutely everywhere.
That is outright insane. Lucas never addressed it because the story is about good space wizard samurai fighting bad space wizard samurai, and even when he dips his toes into political allegory it’s a commentary on modern society and not “how would it be different?”
I’d say Doctor Who occasionally verges into sci fi for this reason though. There are at least some episodes that go “how does life work when space whales?”
I hate that I agree with George Lucas.
I think the distinction is a focus of drama vs action. Star Trek is mostly drama with a Sci Fi dressing and Start Wars is more action with a Sci Fi dressing. Neither are really based on science and both have magical space transportation that lets them move between planets.
They are both great examples of doing what they set out to do, and why I am not a fan of the newer Star Trek movies and shows that try to be closer to the epic fantasy action of Star Wars. Just let them be their own things!
I’ve never really agreed with this. In the scale of sci-fi softness, they’re both in about the same territory. Star wars is slightly softer because of Jedis, but star trek has empaths for example.
The main difference is that star trek tends to do a bit more of speculation about tech, and star wars is more about telling stories about fascism in space, but both do both at times.
Wow. It’s like 1996 again.
While I love the meme pic, in all honesty I’ve always liked both of them in a way that both baseball and football are two very distinct sports that you can like both of as well.
We ain’t no friends with Trekies
You have it confused, nobody is friends with you
Why not? I think ST is a fine fandom. Just not my flavor of scifi, or I didn’t grow up with it.
As a child, I was heavy into Star Wars and always meh on Star Trek. As an adult, I’m still heavy into Star Wars, but I have warmed significantly to Star Trek and really enjoy it now. I think I just didn’t fully understand Star Trek as a child. They’re very different, but both are great.
Star Wars is pretty childish, so it’s understandable that kids like it. I just don’t understand how adults can overlook all of the glaring deficiencies and still enjoy it. There are some cool concepts and scenes, but as a whole it has a lot of room for improvement.
I mean, I enjoy Star Trek, but half of the original series is finding complicated ways for Kirk to bang a blue lady or a woman in a silver bikini with green hair after the landing party dies.
The main cast survives everything, including Spock having his brain removed.
The video calls from other ships completely block their view of their environment, which is usually pretty dangerous.
Characters rarely evolve, the crew frequently gets disarmed and has to resort to melee combat, they constantly ignore their “prime directive”, the transporter always malfunctions, the holodeck goes haywire, etc. etc.
Both series have huge glaringly obvious flaws, you just enjoy Star Trek more.
You make some valid points. I have to respond to this one though:
The video calls from other ships completely block their view of their environment, which is usually pretty dangerous.
You don’t navigate a ship that size by sight. They use sensor data and navigational computers for piloting. Plus they’re usually stationary when they have those conversations.
To add on to your comment:
They have other bridge staff monitoring the sensors and bridge staff notify when there are incoming enemy vessels or incoming fire
Posting again instead of editing, in case you already saw the other reply. I’d also like to point out that you’re talking about plot devices, not the plot itself. Trek tends to tackle serious philosophical issues, where Wars tends to stick with pretty basic good vs bad.
You also referred to the TOS exclusively, which would put it up against the original Wars movies. Honestly I think the original Star Wars movies were better than the Trek show. But as the franchises grew, Star Wars stayed really elementary, where Trek decided to get pretty advanced topic-wise. I think most of TNG is far better than anything Star Wars has put out since the original series. I’ve tried to get into the new stuff and I’m usually left going “oh come on!”. That holds true for new Trek too though. Picard was a disaster.
I’m glad some people like it, but it’s definitely not for me.
Lol they are two different genres
