Yeah, but version 1.0 of the addon was released yesterday or so…

Titles make hype. Getting to 1.0 is a milestone and a place that we can agree to celebrate. Sure, it worked one commit before the 1.0 tag too, but that’s hardly misleading

So what’s different in this case, the addon makes it easier for anyone to get started without technical experience?

1.0 release means going from “we hope this works, but if not, be patient because we’re still working on it and let us know so we can try to fix it” to “we’re pretty confident this works as intended well enough to make it an official feature with announcements and PR.”

            This goes for all software.

It’s weird to call it misleading. Yes, it might have worked, but it was a testing relationship, not an official one.

For context: this is the full release of the addon for wordpress enabling activitypub. It was previously in beta, but it has reached 1.0.

While this is great, it only works for self-hosted blogs when your service provider allows access to the Webfinger endpoint. If not, you can try petitioning your provider to open it up but they may not want to do that. It’s really frustrating.

Super excited about things like Discourse (and one day PhpBB?) getting fediverse support. The connections will be unstoppable!

This is the best summary I could come up with:

In March, WordPress.com owner Automattic made a commitment to the fediverse — the decentralized social networks that include the Twitter rival Mastodon and others — with the acquisition of an ActivityPub plug-in that allows WordPress blogs to reach readers on other federated platforms.

Since the acquisition, the company has improved on the original software in a number of ways, including by now allowing the ability to add blog-wide catchall accounts instead of only per-author.

At the time of its acquisition, the ActivityPub plug-in supported federated platforms including Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, HubZilla, Pixelfed, SocialHome, and Misskey.

Automattic’s CEO Matt Mullenweg has been bullish on the promises of the fediverse — especially given the open-source nature of its decentralized, interconnected server software.

Late last year, for example, the CEO wrote that Tumblr would add support for ActivityPub, the protocol that powers Mastodon and other decentralized social apps.

WordPress’s support for ActivityPub follows a number of moves by other publishers to embrace the fediverse.

The original article contains 375 words, the summary contains 161 words. Saved 57%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!

    Probably a dumb question.

But if a site is using comicpress will it now be possible to see updates of that site via Lemmy?

Not presently. There needs to be better integration of inter-federated content management within lemmy. It is likely on the roadmap long term, but not for some time.

Ah so it may be possible in the future. That whould be cool. Theres a lot of little webcomics out there struggling to be seen. Somthing like that could really help some of artist I think. And I’d love a platform for getting all the updates on the comics I read all in one place.

There’s a lot of misinfo regarding the bad place, it’s more so presently meant to be a repository of information rather than an automated system. Long term as it improves there seems to be desire for automation, but no one really uses it in the fediverse for that and likely won’t for a long time as the site needs lots of work (as pointed out by the site creator himself)
