what is the best alternative to github ? my main requirements are that it should be free, and it should not go down or get discontinued anytime soon

GitLab.com instance runs GitLab Enterprise Edition which is propietary. TeDoMun offers an instance using the Community Edition which is FLOSS. I would recommend SourceHut (sr.ht) or Gitea (codeberg.org, git.disroot.org, etc)
