So I’ve had the opposite experience at most resturants (of all scales/types) in all of the states in which I’ve lived. That being said 100% of the places I’ve been to would have asked her for her drink order. Why the hell is she complaining about the drink she likely ordered herself? That also looks like an average non-fast food burger place, was she expecting champagne?
I have never been to a sit down restaurant that didn’t offer water right after you sit down, and I’ve been to restaurants all over the US and Canada.
Would you like a list that’s hundreds of restaurants long? Vagabondo, Craft, Aroma, PJ O’Brien’s, Ninki, Bhindi, Nami, Blake House, The Keg, and that’s just a handful I’ve been to recently that are within a few blocks of my place.
So I’ve actually had the opposite experience where the first thing they ask is what you want to drink, but they don’t show up with water by default (most of the time). I’m also North America based but I don’t recognize any of the places that you listed so there may just be a mix of practices out there and no firmly set standard.
Of the places you listed though would you recommend them?
Idk bro maybe it’s just where I live but it never happens.
I’ve been all over my state and been to restaurants of all quality and as I stated before the only one that offered drinks right off the bat was a Chinese place giving tea.
I know my experiences aren’t universal but it’s just not a thing here.
Well Ohio is one of the states I’ve not been to, but I’ve been offered drinks right away at places in Louisiana, Florida, New York, California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, New Jersey, Hawaii, and DC (those are the states I’ve been to). Seems Ohio may be in the minority.

No most restaurants ask what you want before bringing out anything
It’s almost as if different places have different standards
Yeah and the amount of restaurants that don’t give you anything until you ask for it is much higher than the opposite.
Hell the only place I’ve ever been that offers drinks before you ask is the local Chinese place that gives you tea.
So saying “most” is just objectively false.
Is this some kind of European thing I’m too American to understand?
It sounds more like most of the places you go to serve fast food or are just in a small town rather than this being a US vs Europe thing.
Name a restaurant.
I have never been to a sit down restaurant that didn’t offer water right after you sit down, and I’ve been to restaurants all over the US and Canada.

Well they often ask what type of water you want first (sparkling, bottles, or tap).
And those are all local places in Toronto, except The Keg which as a steakhouse chain. So if you’re in Toronto, I recommend those places.

I live in Ohio if that helps.
