So we used too much linseed oil, so we had to burn it off so we could recoat it with a lighter gunoil.

Do you make chainmail or is this work to restore/polish chainmail you own? Either way it’s super cool!

I do make chainmail, but not this hauberk. So this was a galvanized hauberk I got on medieval collectibles. It was too shiny for the “grimdark” look I was going for, so I stripped the galvanization off and have been trying different methods to darken it. After the galvanization was removed there was nothing protecting it from rusting. For rust prevention We tried linseed oil, but we put too much on, it caked up, smelled terrible and was just bad over all. So we were burning off what was leff so I could just use gun oil to protect it.

Nope, just recognize how we do frivolous stuff that contributes to climate change. So how are we possibly going to do the big stuff?

Maybe by doing the big stuff that isn’t frivolous and barely contributing anything at all compared to dumping millions of tons of carbon out every day

That would be good if the government wasn’t lying to you. It is in fact none of those things causing climate change, and it is exclusively farting by middle and high school boys. If we get rid of them the world would be a greener place #endchildren2023

We aren’t doing anything though, that’s the issue. I think you’ve misunderstood my comment. Doesn’t matter, doesn’t seem like there’s really anything to discuss here.

I agree not enough is being done and people who agree need to push harder and actually do more to enact change but still, giving people, doing blacksmithing as their craft, shit for not caring enough doesn’t help in any way.

I drive an electric car, and my house is powered by renewable energy. I cut-out most meat from my diet, and stopped drinking cows milk. I think I’m generally doing okay all things considered.

Have you ever plugged into a public charging station, are you 100% renewable? if not you’re not doing enough, you are the problem. /s obviously

Yup, using propane, a relatively clean burning fuel is 100% melting the ice caps and destroying the planet! How could I be so careless…. Curse me and everything I have ever done… fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuckkkkkk

They said “relatively clean burning fuel”. Obviously no fuel is truely “clean”, but compared to others, propane is one of the safest to use, especially for this particular use-case.

Hydrogen made from methane reformation, or from coal powered electrolysis?

Solar panels exist… Just use electrolysis from green sources. If we can’t figure out electricity without coal, then fuel is the least of our problems…

The problem here is round trip efficiency.

Using a battery to store solar power is about 95% efficient. A small amount of energy is lost to heat when charging and discharging.

Using hydrogen as energy storage is about 30% efficient. A small amount of energy is lost when making the hydrogen, but a large amount is lost when converting it back to electricity.

Unfortunately this isn’t even a solvable problem. The fundamental limit of efficiency due hydrogen to electricity is about 50%. Physics and entropy prevent it from being any higher.

Burning hydrogen for heat is about 100% efficient, but heat pumps (running from electricity) can be over 600% efficient. Heat pumps get the extra efficiency by moving heat rather than creating heat directly.

If you wanted to use hydrogen from electrolysis, we would need 3 to 6 times as many solar panels than if we just used batteries.

Hydrogen can be clean, but it’s rarely the best option.

Solar oven isn’t a possibility? I was always wondering why it’s not something done to crack the molecule, I don’t think you can make something greener than a bunch of mirrors oriented on one spot

Also, couldn’t it be offshore? Making drinkable water as a bonus? I guess I’m missing so much knowledge on this because in my head it’s like just perfect, well too perfect to be real

As far as I’m aware, heating water with mirrors will just get you some really hot steam. I don’t think it’s feasible to split hydrogen from water using heat. Please let me know if I’m wrong.
