SMIC hired hundreds of TSMC engineers by luring them with very large compensation packages. Whether they stole IP or not cannot be proven
US stole UK patents when it was developing as well. So nevermind, it was time for China to finally have develop these chips; lets wait for when 5nm will appear. America/West monopoly was never good other than for themselves.
7nm development has pitted SMIC alongside TSMC and above Intel. Also the guy who headed TSMC, Intel, Samsung and other foundries before, is now heading SMIC, who brought with himself many TSMC engineers. It is clear SMIC will become a colossal independent foundry, helping breakthrough from USA/UK’s ARM/x86 and Taiwan puppet problems.
