So, I have an older-ish (last 5 years I think) TV that before now, l’ve had plugged into my computer, and it sits near my bed for media streaming and the such.
I had a GTX 1060 6GB and it worked completely fine, like a dream, absolutely no issues
I recently upgraded to an AMD RX 6700 XT, and now, l’m having extreme issues with it.
First and foremost, it always shows up as “Generic Non-PnP Monitor” in device manager. Second, there’s no sound driver so it doesn’t play any sounds. Third, and I don’t know how 1 fixed it, but it’ll only display in 640x480.
l’ve taken many steps to try to fix it, and I’ll list them and what it ended up doing.
- Unplug HDMI, replug- no change
- Uninstall driver in device manager - no change
- Manually update driver to “Generic PNP monitor” or “Digital Flat Panel 1920x1 080” or “Generic Television” -no change. Driver does not update
- Use DDU to clean drivers (in safe mode) and reinstall- Works, until I restart my computer, then goes back to Generic Non-PNP
- Unplug TV from power, wait 10 minutes, start it up again -no change
- Use different HDMI cable - haven’t tested yet, don’t have one long enough
- Use different monitor - other monitor works fine. Had an issue at the beginning, but unplugging HDMI and putting it back in made it work
Notes- The 6700 XT has 3 displayport connectors and one HDMI. The 3 DP spots are filled up by the monitors at my desk. 2 DP to HDMI adapters, and one DP to DVI adapter. All of the monitors at my desk work fine
The HDMI going to my ty has a lot of plastic around the connector, so when plugging into my GPU,I think it’s not connected all the way. I understand this might be an issue
I have used CRU to try to copy all the info from when the TV was working, to the device where the TV isn’t working. When I use restart64 to restart GPU drivers, it makes no changes
Like I said before, I used DDU to try to fix. Here is what I did
- Boot into safe mode
- Clean Nvidia drivers (from last GPU
- Restart, boot into safe mode
- Clean AMD drivers
- Restart, install AMD drivers This did not fix the issue.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
With further inspection: the TV, connected to the HDMI port of the GPU, (with an HDMI cable) is detected as HDMI until computer reboot or GPU driver reboot with CRU’s restart.exe. after that, it is detected as DVI-D. I was able to use CRU to consistently output 1920x1080, but I don’t get audio, because y’know, it’s being detected as DVI-D.
I’ve seen this exact issue in the past with AMD cards, like this post: https://community.amd.com/t5/drivers-software/latest-driver-21-3-1-locked-my-monitor-to-640x480/m-p/465318
You either try updating to a more recent driver (or a recent beta driver), or try downgrading your driver to an older version, and see if it works.
In my experience though, AMD cards work better with DisplayPort, so you could perhaps try unplugging one of your other monitors, and reconnect your TV using the DisplayPort adapter. Might be best to power off the TV first before you swap the ports.
Unfortunately rolling back drivers did not help and I hadn’t no idea where to find beta drivers
I’ve tried using a DP adapter, and it does the same thing, except my computer freezes a lot when I plug it in, and the screen goes crazy… and only displays in 640x480.
I didn’t try it while it was powered off (mostly because of frustration and trying to do things quickly) so I can try that too
I also just updated to the most recent drivers… could try the beta.
Maybe I could also try the drivers from my GPU manufacturer’s website? Powercolor Fighter, I think the last ones they have on the website is from 2021, but wouldn’t that cause issues later on if im trying to play more recent games?
I’m kind of behind the times with graphics cards, but do you have 4 displays hooked up at once when the TV is plugged in? If so, are you sure the card supports 4 displays? The last amd card I had, the HMDI port was tied to one of the displayports. You could only use one of the two at a time.
This was probably 5 years ago so not sure if it’s still relevant.
Yeah, I do have 4 total displays. The GPU has one HDMI and 3 DP Inputs.
Two monitors use 2 DP Inputs with a DP to HDMI adapter
One monitor is using one DP Input with a DP to DVI adapter
The TV I’m having issues with is using the HDMI port, with an HDMI cable. No adapters.
What brand is your 6700? Might be able to find a manual for it.
Just wondering if it really only supports 3 displays.
It’s the Powercolor Fighter 6700 XT. I have the box next to me, but of course, no manual.
Also I just tried unplugging my DVI monitor and it’s still doing the same thing mentioned in the OP.
The weirdest thing is that the TV will be detected as HDMI, until I reboot computer or graphics drivers using CRU’s restart.exe, and then it’ll be detected as DVI-D, meaning no audio. I’ve gotten it to output in 1920x1080 but I just can’t get Audio output, because, y’know, it’s being detected as DVI.
Ya thats a tough one. I couldn’t find much for a manual online for it either. What happens if you disconnect all monitors and only have the TV hooked up through HDMI and you reboot a few times? Everything stay normal throughout then?
I found this for the 6700xt: https://www.amd.com/system/files/documents/quick-start-guide-6700xt.pdf
It states: Only up to three (3) passive adapter cables may be used. Active adapter cables are required for additional displays. The following table lists options for attaching displays to your graphics card.
I’m not an expert on passive vs active cables but that might be something to look into.
I will try that now, but also
The other night, I just got sick of the TV not working, so I unplugged it, then carried my main monitor to the spot the TV was in. Plugged it in to the same HDMI cord, and it worked completely fine
Ninja edit: I realize that brings the adapters / spots being used down to 3, so of course it’ll work
Things that do work -
Unplug TV from power and computer. Wait 5 minutes. Plug back in. - works until computer or graphic drivers reboot
Switch HDMI cable to different plug in on TV (HDMI 1 to 2) - works until computer driver reboot
