Designed to tackle the trails, Brompton’s new G Line is right at home on cracked, potholed and cobblestoned urban streets.
This is dope, but the best folding bike for city travel is a used beat up but perfectly functional dahan that if someone steals it or it gets destroyed you say “damn” and buy another used one.
Used Dahons are how cheap? New ones start at almost a thousand.
I got a beat up old one that is perfectly functional off of craigslist for $100. I got lucky but in my region I see used older dahons going for $350 or so.
Wow, you got a great deal!
I’d like one, but for $3,300 I’d expect a better transmission than an Alfine, that seems like Rolhoff territory.
This is the entire problem with all OTS ebikes imo. For basically any given price point, you get cheaper components and a more expensive, proprietary battery compared to a DiY build. It’s a lot of money to save yourself maybe two hours of turning a wrench.
Betterridge law.
The bike weighs just under 33 pounds
Wow, is it really that heavy??
Folding adds a lot of weight and steel is heavy.
I have a 20" wheelfolding bike, and even with front and rear racks it’s not 33lbs!
Even my steel MTB with 26" wheels isn’t 33lbs! I wonder if they’ve simply overbuilt this for added durability.
Yep, that’s kind of the point of the Gline: It’s a beefy bike built to take a beating.
They’re doing free tests rides in toronto, and I’m so tempted. $3000+ really is a little much, though. 😮💨
Ride it and if you like it, keep an eye out for used ones? I agree though, for over 3k I’d expect a Rollhoff hub
My main issue with Brompton, is that they don’t have a dealer network that extends out my way. And since so many of the components are proprietary, that’s kind of important!
I’ve spoken to Brompton owners who’ve had to wait on parts, or travel to the city to get them… not my cup of tea!
But seeing one in the wild always puts a smile on my face.
This might be better for my diehard biking buddy. We test drove the smallish model, and he was having a hell of a time trying to use it while we were biking behind him and shrieking with laughter. His feet were so big that his foot was either hitting the rack on the back, or the front wheel whenever he was pedaling.
This resulted in him limping around three blocks with a dorky demo vest on, while we shouted suggestions and he indignantly tried to find a body position that allowed him to ride xD
