In the 21th century, sun tans were an important aspect of fashion – well tanned skin was the mark of a well-bred man. Unfortunately, being out in the sun was on the decline, thus affecting more americans than just the tech obsessed gamers. This happened well before the discovery of genetic pigment alteration, so people afflicted with bad skin suffered all the effects, including wrinkles and botchy patches. As good sun tans were associated with status and style, loneliness and bad eating habits compounded the shame of having pale skin.
